    Think outside the bolt

This summer I bought a beautiful vintage linen tablecloth, thinking "I'll find a use for it someday." It was the wrong shape for my table, but I just had to buy it. The crisp, heavyweight linen was in pristine condition. I loved the embroidered details and the scalloped edges.

A few weeks ago, I realized what I was going to do with the tablecloth: make a sling! I cut the fabric to feature the embroidery and detailing. I had enough to make two mother-child sling sets. Here is the end result (I am wearing a medium length sling):

On the adult sling, the decorative edge goes along the top rail, then curves gently along the tail. On the child's sling, the decorative edge is at the bottom of the tail.

Sold as a set for $70. Only 2 available.

If you've been wanting a ring sling, why not think outside the bolt? Use fabric from your wedding or bridesmaid's dresses. Give a beautiful curtain or wallhanging a second life. Scour thrift stores, garage sales, or consignment stores for table linens or vintage fabrics.

    Fabric specifications for custom slings

Whatever fabric you choose, it should be something woven rather than knit, non-stretchy, and not too slippery/silky.

One of my favorite fabrics is linen or a linen blend. I find that the looser weave of a linen fabric (as opposed to something like a dense cotton twill) gives just a little bit of stretch and makes the sling very comfortable.

Another really nice fabric, if you want something a bit more exotic looking, is silk dupioni, which has a nubby texture. Silk is lightweight, strong, and very durable. I especially like a two-tone dupioni woven with different colors of warp and weft, which makes it appear to change colors as you move. A dupioni's weave gives it enough "grip" so that it doesn't slip out of the rings. And even though silk has a reputation as a delicate fabric, it's actually machine washable.

You will see the back of the fabric on the tail, so select something that looks nice on both sides.

I will need 2 1/4 yards for a medium length sling, and 2 1/2 yards for a long one. Most people fit a medium length sling, but if, for example, you're married to a linebacker-sized guy, you'd probably want a longer sling.

I also need a spool of matching thread.

    Wearing instructions

Sakura Bloom, which sells high-end linen and silk slings, has a wonderful collection of how-to videos, from how to thread your sling to several different ways to carry your baby.

Zolowear, another source for ring slings, offers illustrations and videos showing you how to position the baby in different carries in a ring sling, depending on their age.

Mamatoto also has some instructions and photographs about how to thread, put on, and then place the baby in the sling. Also on the site are videos for wearing all kinds of slings (scroll down to find the ring sling videos).

I personally prefer a vertical carry with newborns. You place the baby upright inside the sling on your chest, legs and all--for the first 2 months or so they like to keep their legs folded in against their bodies. Babies love being carried upright, and with some head support from the top of the sling, they will happily sleep in that position.

    About My Slings

Second Womb ring slings are adjustable to just about any size and shape. They adapt to a number of carries, from the newborn cradle hold, to a toddler hip carry. My ring slings are similar to Maya Wrap slings, but with a few improvements:

~ Instead of accordion folds (which only allow you to wear the sling on one shoulder), my slings have fan pleats. This lets you wear the sling on either shoulder.
~ I use aluminum rather than steel rings; they are much lighter weight and come in many different colors.
~ The fan pleats are aesthetically pleasing.
~ There is a row of stitching where the sling folds back over the rings. This holds the pleats in place when you wash the sling, so it will always look as nice as when you bought it.
